I desperately want to love this computer. Apple’s quality just seems to be extremely inconsistent.
The screen is gorgeous. I bought the 24″ model, added another gigabyte of RAM, and have been thoroughly impressed with the system performance and the display. Watching videos — especially HD content — makes this beast well worth the price; it would probably rival some decent televisions, and it works perfectly for my small apartment. The new keyboard design is nice, but it’s nevertheless just a beautifully-designed ergonomic nightmare, and I’m letting my co-worker borrow it instead (since I have a better keyboard anyway). The Mighty Mouse is also neat, but I use a trackball, and could never use that mouse properly since its cable is so ridiculously short. Regardless, it is teh sexy for watching video podcasts and DVDs, and doesn’t hang when doing more than one thing like my Mac Mini did.
But, I’m running into some serious issues. Here’s the list thus far:
- It kernel panicked the first day, while I was setting it up. Now I was putting some stress on the system — hooking up 1TB of storage through three external drives — but come on. Let me at least install some crazy kernel extensions before it starts panicking on me.
- There’s a dead pixel, out of the box. It’s near the upper right hand corner of the screen, and thus out of the way, but still.
- The screen doesn’t feel like glass. Tapping it with my fingernail, it sounds just like a regular old plastic screen, it just looks a lot shinier. I hope I’m just being picky, and didn’t get screwed somehow.
- This is the kicker: WindowServer will intermittently hang. On Mac OS X, this means that the entire desktop freezes, and while you can still SSH into the system, to use the main display you need to reboot the machine.
This has happened three times so far, and each time I was looking at the iTunes store in iTunes; I’m starting to suspect that it has something to do with the graphics card, because I can SSH into the system, and using
samplecan see that iTunes is hung off in the weeds in some graphics routine. Both iTunes and the WindowServer are stuck in uninterruptible sleep, presumably waiting for the graphics hardware to stop freaking out. There’s no obvious crash information, but in the logs I did see this:Aug 19 15:02:40 rigel kernel[0]: ** ASIC Hang Log Start **
Aug 19 15:02:40 rigel kernel[0]: 0x01019583 00009062 00009583 00000000
Aug 19 15:02:40 rigel kernel[0]: 0x00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
Aug 19 15:02:40 rigel kernel[0]: 0x0011a010 00000000 00000000 0083106b
Aug 19 15:02:40 rigel kernel[0]: 0x00f8fc00 00000000 00000001 00008a12which continues with a lot of hex values. Fun.
From reading the discussion boards on Apple’s website, it looks like a few other people have seen this, usually while playing games, which typically means exercising the video.
Update: Rumor has it that the iMac Software Update 1.1 fixes the “ASIC hang” problem. It seems to be working for me.
Update (October 6): Apple seems to be working on the issue. Software update 1.1 does not completely solve the iMac hang problem.
Update (November 3): iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger) and 1.3 (Leopard).

I have the same problems with the same machine. Can ssh into it, but display hangs (mouse (beachball) pointer shows and moves though). Got the same ASIC hang in the log.
Dunno if it’s a hard or software problem… if you find a fix, please please drop me an email…

Same machine, same problem here … I am also suspecting the video driver – is there a fix available for this?

Got here by googling. Same thing has happened to me while playing WoW at least twice.
Same machine BTW.

I have the same problem. Freezes every time I play UT2004 for Mac, or Quicktime for Windows in Parallels with Win XP.
Seems like there’d be a way to kill whatever processes are hanging and re-initiate the WindowServer somehow? Any hackers out there wanna post a fix liek that, we can do it from an SSH connection or via a script that watches the apropriate processes and acts on it’s own.
(until Apple fixes this)

@GP: unfortunately, it looks like WindowServer is stuck in what is called “uninterruptible sleep” — that is, it is waiting for I/O, in some routine in the driver that is waiting for hardware to return. You can’t kill a process that is in this state on any Unix, including Darwin.

Same machine, same problem.
Happened two time since I got the iMac.
Happened opening iTunes while also QuickTime was already opened.
csm | 12-Sep-07 at 8:53 pm | Permalink
This seems to be 100% reproducible:
1. Open iTunes. Select the iTunes store.
2. Select a storefront that has an embedded “Cover Flow” component (movies and TV shows will do).
3. Scroll the page with the embedded Cover Flow component up and down rapidly.
Expected behavior: the page can be scrolled in iTunes without any noticeable problems.
Actual behavior: at some point the system will hang. The cursor can still move, but you cannot interact with any windows.
I’m going to call Apple support about this. I’ll update this when things happen.

There is a new Sofware Update 1.1 for the iMac, containing new gfx drivers from Apple. Does this solve the issue for you? I am still testing, but in any case the bugreport I issued is not yet marked as closed …
csm | 15-Sep-07 at 11:33 pm | Permalink
I just tried my little repro scenario after installing the update, and the system did not hang.
So, it looks good so far.

After the new Sofware Update 1.1 for the iMac, here we are with still the same f….ing problem…
Truy | 20-Sep-07 at 6:07 am | Permalink
After software update, still problems.
Now I see garbled screen sometimes after a reboot.
Still ASIC Hang in the system.log
Now can make machine crash by moving mouse over the animated dock for long enough (and fast enough).
Could it really be hardware, when so many are affected?
Jeff | 20-Sep-07 at 3:47 pm | Permalink
Installed the update and still getting the problem 1-2 times per day
Steve | 21-Sep-07 at 3:13 am | Permalink
The problem is not fixed by ofware Update 1.1
Again some random hangs with ASIC in the log when you work.

The 1.1 update has made my machine even less stable. 24″ aluminum iMac here. Crashes frequently when I’m using Aperture. I get the same nasty crash dumps too.
Folks, if you’re bothered by this, as I am, please call Apple by phone and tell them they need to fix this! Here is the number:

That is an excellent point. I haven’t had any problems since the 1.1 update (and yes, I use it mostly for music, movies, mail, and hacking, and don’t do anything graphically intense, like gaming or image/video editing), but if you still have problems, you really should talk with Apple Support.
I mean, I work in this industry, and we do fuck up sometimes. If we do fuck up, we usually want to make it right, and we do make ways available for us to make it right.

I tried installing a preview of Leopard, just to see if it’s a software or hardware thing. Unfortunately, I get the same behavious, with Asic HANG and lockups, most frequently when using Aperture.

I have a same problem now,
and I found another way to reproduce the crash:
Just simple type a word in the Spotlight input area, etc “apache”, and wait about 5-6 sec, It goes to freezing, now one thing you can do is hold down the Power button.
csm | 26-Sep-07 at 11:31 pm | Permalink
Is that a joke about how slow Spotlight is?
csm | 26-Sep-07 at 11:44 pm | Permalink
OK, that was prescient, but annoying: right after I posted that comment (less that five minutes), my iMac froze while I was using Font Book to disable the Mshtakan font.
APPLES GRAPHICS DRIVER TEAM FTW!

Add me to the list of crashers, my less than 30 day old 24″ aluminum iMac started freezing, seems like after an iTunes update. I know that a lot of people are saying it is going on with 1.1. Took it to the Apple Store and the Genius reformated and fresh installed OS said that should do it. Took it home and the display became totally garbled, took it back and they gave me a new unit. But I’ve seen the freezing a couple of times on this unit too.

AMD Warns About ATI Radeon HD Without Video Acceleration.
AMD Blames Test Software for Defective Graphics Chips
Category: Video
by Anton Shilov
[ 08/01/2007 | 11:52 PM ]
ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, said on Wednesday that due to issues with test software, it failed to determine imperfect graphics processors from the ATI Radeon HD 2000 family. As a consequence, some graphics card makers had to recall certain production bathes. The problem, however, can be solved with drivers, according to some sources.
Apparently, certain graphics cards based on ATI Radeon HD 2400 and ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics processing units (GPUs) from AMD come with disabled universal video decoder (UVD) technology that provides hardware acceleration of high-definition H.264 and VC-1 videos. The problem, according to claims made by undisclosed makers of graphics cards in an interview with DigiTimes, was a result of a bug in AMD’s hardware validation software.
Some other sources indicated that A13 revision of the RV610 (ATI Radeon HD 2400) chip came with disabled UVD, whereas later revisions came with enabled feature. According to reports, the issue can be fixed by updating BIOSes of the boards or by using the latest drivers, which are due in August.
Even though the problem may not be industry-wide, it can still cause delays of personal computers featuring ATI Radeon HD 2400/2600 graphics cards, as computer makers will have to ensure that UVD is enabled on all the boards that they install, a process that may take a long time to accomplish. On the other hand, some makers may skip the procedure for systems not equipped with Blu-ray or HD DVD drives.
Earlier this year AMD already disabled UVD in its ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT product, claiming that usage model of a high-end PC does not require hardware video acceleration. Nevertheless, sources close to the company implied that eventually the capability to decode HD video may be enabled from drivers even for the top-of-the-range products.

My old “white” 24 inch iMac does the same… it hangs with the beach ball spinning while I’m still able to access the system via SSH, in order to restore the main screen I must reboot the system… It happens every few days since last two weeks… it was absolutely stable three or four weeks ago.

Same problem as most of you. But there is only complains in this thread. Has anybody find SOLUTIONS?
Thnk you

I think there was a software (maybe firmware) update for this ages ago. I haven’t had this problem anymore.
